Researchers from the University of Göttingen studied seismic sensors as a new way to detect flood potential.

They demonstrated that the seismometer can sense a flood and predict it so citizens can be promptly alerted. Researchers also found that being able to measure the ‘seismic footprint’ of the flood provides information on its magnitude, velocity and trajectory in real-time, which could be used for future flood protection.

The results of the research were published in Geophysical Research Letters. You can find more info here.
